What are the intended outcomes?

Professional Learning

  • Teachers will gain greater confidence with Problem Solving and Reasoning curriculum aims through PD about explicit teaching of problem solving and reasoning.
  • Teachers will gain understanding about representations used to solve problems and how these support the development of conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning.
  • Teachers involved in the Work Group will share and disseminate good practice within their own schools.

Developing Teaching

  • Shared approaches to leading Problem Solving and Reasoning tasks.
  • Participation in Lesson Study as a model for CPD.

Whole School Development

  • Improved consistency to support development of resilience and independence.
  • Improved consistency to use multiple solutions or approaches to solving problems effectively in lessons.
  • Including tasks with anticipated multiple approaches or multiple solutions highlighted in schemes of learning.
  • Shared policies relating to Problem Solving and Reasoning.

Pupil Achievement, Attitudes, Participation or Experience

  • Improved resilience and independence to tackle problem solving and reasoning questions.
  • Improved confidence and engagement in mathematics, including through teachers valuing alternative approaches and solutions.
  • Improved enjoyment through greater awareness of connections.

What will it involve?

Participation in three one-day workshops and completion of gap tasks between workshops.

Workshop 2:  Reasoning

  • Collaborative review of Gap Task activity
  • NCETM PD materials to develop connections to support reasoning with Fractions and Measurement
  • Different Types of Reasoning
  • Progression in Reasoning
  • Representations to support conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning

Workshop 3:  Further development of Problem Solving and Reasoning

  • Collaborative review of Gap Task activity, with Maths Leads from participating schools invited
  • Focus on whole school policies and strategies being developed
  • Further development of Problem Solving & Reasoning approaches, as identified from Days 1 and 2
