Spatial Reasoning in Key Stage 1

Bookings are limited to one place per school for this Work Group.

Professional development should be used to raise the quality of practitioners’ knowledge of mathematics, of children’s mathematical development, and of effective mathematical pedagogy.

 EEF KS1 Guidance Report

This work group will support participants to develop their mathematical subject knowledge of spatial reasoning and an increased understanding of effective, mathematical pedagogies. Learning trajectories will also be explored so that participants gain a detailed understanding of how children learn early mathematical concepts.

Who will be leading the group?

Jo Makin-Isherwood and Fiona Wood

Jo has been Primary Teaching for Mastery Lead for CODE Maths Hub, progressing as an Accredited NCETM PD Lead and Primary Specialist. She worked with Early Years, KS1 and KS2 classes, including mixed age classes, before becoming Maths Subject lead and Senior Leader, including extensive SEND experience.

Fiona is a Primary Teaching for Mastery Lead and NCETM PD Accredited lead, and has worked for NCETM co-developing the Mastering Number programme. She is an experienced Primary Maths subject leader, with MaST qualification. Fiona has undertaken extensive Primary Maths research of different educational systems, including working collaboratively with and hosting teachers from Shanghai. She has worked collaboratively as part of the national working party to develop Subject Knowledge Work Groups.

Who is it for?

KS1 teachers who want to develop specialist knowledge for teaching shape, space and measure and so enhance teaching for their pupils.

If you are an ECT we would recommend the ECT Work Groups rather than this Work Group.  Please see link to the ECT Work Group:  Hereford and Telford

What are the intended outcomes?

  • Improved knowledge about spatial reasoning
  • Improved pedagogical knowledge
  • Increased understanding of developmental progression in KS1, ensuring sequences of learning are cohesive
  • Increased pupil and participant confidence
  • Deeper pupil understanding of aspects of shape, space and measure

What will it involve?

  • 3 one-day workshops, each with a separate subject knowledge/pedagogical focus
  • Collaborative planning of school-based tasks to carry out in the classroom with target children
  • Collaborative tasks to reflect on how their change in practice impacts on pupil understanding and engagement
  • Online discussion as part of a professional community

All participants are expected to attend all workshops and complete tasks in their schools between the sessions. They will contribute to the national evaluation process, through a short online survey after the Work Group has finished.

Joining details will be sent by email approximately ten days before the first workshop and will be noted in the Basecamp community for the participants of this Work Group.
