The purpose of the programmes in this project is to support primary teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in the maths classroom.

Who will be leading the group?

Louise Hoskyns-Staples

Louise worked as a researcher in mathematics assessment within the DfE and her current research interest is mathematics teacher pedagogy. She led the primary mathematics ITE team at the University of Worcester, teaching and supervising student research, and providing CPD to local schools. Louise is a former Secondary Head of Maths, and has led many recent developments in Primary Maths Education. She is well placed to share her Primary and Secondary expertise to help develop subject and pedagogical knowledge.

Who is it for?

These SKTM programmes are designed for teachers who would like to further develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. They will be particularly relevant for NQTs/RQTs, teachers that have moved phases or teachers that have not received maths-specific training.

What are the intended outcomes?

As a result of this project, participants will not only be able to ‘do’ mathematics, but will also have the appropriate pedagogical knowledge to teach and support their pupils well. Participants will develop both their knowledge about maths and knowledge about the teaching of maths, developing better pedagogy and being aware of how pupils learn, and how to teach the content most effectively. Classroom practice will develop through participants’ engagement with gap tasks between meetings, trying out activities with pupils to promote understanding, reasoning and fluency.

What will it involve?

Classroom practice will develop through gap tasks where participants try out activities to promote depth of understanding, reasoning and fluency; these might include pupil interviews, lesson study and work scrutiny. Research and evidence are used to inform their practice and participants are encouraged to share these more widely in schools to support discussion on current policies and approaches.

The programme is based on four core primary modules:

• Number sense
• Additive reasoning
• Multiplicative reasoning
• Fractions

An additional module has been developed as an introduction, which sets the scene for the current maths teaching landscape. 

Additional materials for each module are also available that focus on progression. The modules are expected to be integral to the design of the SKTM programme.

All participants are expected to attend all three workshops and complete gap tasks in their schools between the sessions. They will be asked to keep a reflection log for their own use and contribute to the national evaluation process, through a short online survey after the Work Group has finished.

Cover costs of up to £200 per day will be paid for teachers in their first two years of teaching. Please indicate where requested on the booking form.
