Challenging Topics at GCSE - online - 1315-1600

Friday 11 June

In this project, teachers work together to unpick challenging topics. Participants develop insight into the associated difficulties and misconceptions to support teaching in the short term but also consider the implications for longer term curriculum design. The approaches developed can be used across mathematical areas and key stages.

Who will be leading the group?

Vanessa Brown

Vanessa is an experienced NCETM Accredited PD Lead and had led this Work Group over the past 3 years.

Who is it for?

Secondary school maths teachers including heads of department, given the curriculum coherence aspect.

What are the intended outcomes?

  • Teachers will hone their ability to analyse what it is about; certain topics that makes them more challenging and be able to apply these analytical skills more widely in the curriculum.
  • Through detailed study of one topic, teachers will develop a sharper understanding of what it means for teaching to be 'effective' and how this might be evaluated in class and through assessment in all its forms.
  • Pupils in the participant teachers' classes will become more confident in their own skills and abilities, developing a deeper and more connected understanding of prior content thus enabling them to tackle the challenging topics.

What will it involve?

Participants explore key GCSE topics in depth, identifying issues and common misconceptions, how these might be addressed through activities and questioning which promote deeper thinking and how teaching in KS3 might be modified or utilised to improve understanding for this topic in KS4
